I needed another IO card for the wife's 386DX40 that I built her as I was
unable to configure the HD controller's COMM port for ONLY COMM1. I disabled
the COMM ports on the controller and installed a Boca VESA HD controller and
IO card. Since this is only a 386 there is no VESA bus, so I disabled the FD
and HD controllers and configured the COMM1 and LPT1 ports (it was very
clearly marked) and installed it into the 386's ISA slot. It works just fine
in the ISA slot. Apparently only the HD controller uses the VESA section.
Something to keep in mind if you have trouble finding ISA IO cards but have
an unused VESA card lying about. I have also heard that VESA video cards will
also work in ISA slots, but I have not tried that.
