Thanks for all the good input. Yes, the lights are useful tools
-but I don't need them for most of my casual work - if everything
is working right..
MUX cards. I'd LOVE one - but haven't looked to see if there's a
local source.
Hammer's comments on security and safety really ring true, too.
I can't tell how many times I have pulled the phone plug to keep
an autodial feature from actually dialing out. WIth an external,
I would have just hit the power switch.
The safety issue, though....since my reading was based on leased
lines - I think this may be the real clincher for some
applications. If you don't know what kind of voltages may appear
on a line - fallen lines, lightening, etc... then it's nice to
know that there's one more box between your computer and that
voltage.
