My last buy, an internal, could not be used for DOS although it was not a typical winmodem but only PNP. I sold it to a windows user. With an external you get a modem which you can use with DOS, Linux and ... And because I am to lazy to set up a network (I even do not know if it could be done with a XT and a Pentium II) I am using a Modem Splitter in order to use the external modem with two (up to three possible on my model) computers. This gives me even the extra advantage of a surge protector (build in) which is in my region with up to 450 lightnings a year not a real luxury :-).
