First don't confuse "Winmodem" or "PnP" crap (all "internal" cards)
with a real, internal modem-card.
Then between internal/external, besides of the aspects named often,
(the former are cheaper, don't occupy a serial connection, while the
latter give better control on what happens) there two more I consider
essential.
For reasons I do not know (I guess it's simply fatigue of the line
relay), internal modems - which are always on current - die sooner.
I had numbers of internal modems that ended after less than a year
with electrical faults. While all of the external ones (even the very
old ones) still work Ok.
And then there is SAFETY, linked to that dedicated shut-off button: I
think it's worth while to have control over what happens with the line
to/from outside.
I have this friend in SAfrica who learned the hard way - as she left her
Winblows machine mostly ON all the time (inconsiderately, ecologically
as well as economically; but this is what Win$ make people too, with
those eternal boot-up waits) she got "nice" visitors over the modem
line. These were "professionals" - precisely in the branch of the
(rather sensitive) issue she worked about.
