My telecommunications company had its monopoly end only a few years
ago. I think everyone is lazy or scared as only about 10-15% switched
away. My ISP is owned by one of the "alternative" telcos and I asked
my father for us to change to that company so my internet bill could
be charged onto that bill (thus eliminating the need of me having a
credit card [because they're soon changing the charging structure]).
He wouldn't, even though it was apparently more than 10% cheaper for
long distance.

] Therefor, the extra revenues made on a cheap yet luxury service, used to be
] long distance, now is internet, are used to subsidize the necessary utility
] where it is expensive. I am glad that my telco won't go bankrupt too soon,
] but it doesn't seem to be getting fat. I wouldn't mind a job with them either.

Many telcos have their own ISP, and now the two biggest telcos
provide cablemodem access to the three biggest cities here. [Arg,
missed me by 100km!]. But now apparently the whole country can get
high speed internet for the same sort of price as the city
[Satellite!]. So Telstra is just branching out into other areas. They
are now advertising that they are providing four billion people with
the Olympics!

Even reckons I should go and get a job there too, to do something
with my mechatronic engineering studies. :)
