Under Tools->Options->Maintenance you can tell Outlook Express to empty the
deleted items on exit. On the Send tab, you can tell it whether or not to
save sent copies. Outlook 98 has similar features as well. They're just
safety features for newbies, but not hidden. There are various options for
automatic compacting as well.
I've got a ton of stuff archived (multiple mailing lists and several
accounts feed into this mailbox) and it's all stored in 3.5MB.
