On Sunday, hammer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> typed:
] Now, there is this far-away correspondent/friend of mine who says he
] doesn't know and cannot find how to suppress his M$-mailer's diarrhea.
] As my own setup is almost completely M$-free, I have no way to tell
] him anything but RTFM - but I suspect it's even more difficult than
] that, kind of an almost hidden and uncomfortable procedure to make it
] especially cumbersome.
To do it to current mail only, in the View menu, select Plain Text.
It will ask if you really want to do it, say yes. (This is in the
Composing Window)
More permamently, in Options, Preferences, Send tab, select Plain
Text. Also look in Preferences [IIRC] there too and select 8 bit in
preference to quoted-printable or base64.
At uni we are only allowed 10 megabytes of "H drive", and are forced
to use Outlook. (Netscape is provided but "Only for use for viewing
JavaScript and HTML that the supported browser [MSIE] can't support"
or similar)
So I do this esp when sending out large emails (eg Jokes) and tell
friends to do the same.
And, you know Outlook doesn't look after its files properly; eg When
sent an email theres a copy in "Outbox" and "Sent Items" and if you
delete it theres a third copy in "Deleted Items". At least with the
likes of Arachne there's no "Compact Files" needed.
No wonder everyone else is complaining about the amount of space
provided. Last year everyone used Netscape 3 and we had 2 meg of
space and there seemed to be fewer problems. <G>
] One stupid nastiness of this M$ware seems that apparently people using
] these mailers even cannot *see* the whole of what they send out in fact.
Someone actually got up me for a signature (a smaller one than the
one I have here even), while he sends out HTML. Some people just have
no idea. [My signature would have been smaller then the MIME
separators/headers alone]
] Some rough calculation: with a daily turnover of about 600 million
] emails (think I saw number of daily 6 *billion* lately), and just
] supposing one-fourth of them done that way, with the average mail of
] 3,500 signs getting blown up to 10 K (conservative estimate), about a
] trillion signs are shoveled around for just nothing. As these are each
] up/downloaded by users respectively, i.e. twice - say, at a good
] average speed of 3000 cps -, this means 11 million minutes metered(*)
] and paid telco/ISP connection time each day, or about 0.6 million US$
] per day *additional* telco fees cashed in daily; just for built-in
] trash.
It can be massive, just the HTML mail. And most of its pointless. Any
WYSIWYG HTML editor (HTML mailers included) makes code that is far
from what you see. They often try to be ultra-compatible, with
indents everywhere, quotes and end-tags on everything (eg:
<table width="100">
<tr>
<td width="100">
<DIV color="black" align="left">
Stuff in this cell
</DIV>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
etc),
the <!DOCTYPE> even! Unfortuneatley there are other problems...
] Half of that is is the mail receivers' money, and they cannot do
] anything against it. I'd call that waylay.
Conspiracy! <G>
