After searching through several dictionaries and Roget's Thesaurus, I
believe your safest "opposite" of append would be "prefix" (used as a verb
with the accent on the second syllable). The words suggested here by other
listers don't appear in my references. Although the use of affix and prefix
as verbs is not that common outside of grammatical inflection, I see no
other similar word contrasts in English; there just doesn't seem to be an
ordinary opposite of "append" in regular usage.
