After sending my last opinion on a word for the opposite of "append", I
neglected to check BARRON'S Dictionary of Computer Terms for the existence
of "prepend". Yes, it's listed there with the definition you've indicated.
If the word is now showing up in the most recent common dictionaries, then
it's now an "official" word; otherwise, it's only an official *programming*
term. If it's not yet commonly used, then *prefix* (as a verb and the
opposite of suffix, both accented on the last syllable) would suffice for
the opposite of append.

So much for "splitting hairs". ;-)
