[SURVPC] what now?

I don't want to turn this into a Linux list, but...
A friend installed Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 for me.  According to the book
that is the hard part.  When I am logged in as user, whatever I try to
do I get a message that I need premission.  How do I as root give myself
as user permission to run a program?
