Okay, here's the details:
Two computers, one is a 586 w/32MB RAM, the other a 486 w/24MB RAM. The
586 has an smc ethercard elite 16 ultra NIC using netbuei, the 486 has two
NICs one a 3com etherlink III running tcpip, the other a Novell Anthem
NE1000 using netbuei.
I have connected the two via the netbuei nics, using coaxial cable with BNC
connectors.
Each nic installed successfully and I am able to access the internet via
cable modem on the 3com.
I am unable to get a connection between the two. Each computer shows
itself in network neighborhood, but not the other. Find computer doesn't
work either.
The workgroup is identical on each. I have tried another cable, while it
is possible that I have two cables that don't work, it seems unlikely.
Pretty hard to wreck coax. (50 ohms)
I've tried with no t-connectors and terminators, I've tried with
t-connectors and 50 ohm terminators.
I've tried with the 3com removed also.
I've tried windows logon, and client for microsoft windows logon.
Both computers are configured for share level access, with file and printer
sharing installed.
Ideally I'd like to access the internet from both computers but I don't
think this can be done without a gateway. I'll deal with that later, by
adding a linux machine to the system, if I can get these two to talk.
At this point, what might be missing?
