Easy there fella, there's a difference between having a linux toy and
having a server. If I try to set up a server it would mean my internet
access would be dependant on it and if I screwed up a night of work to
repair. if I just set up a box with linux, I can play with no fear.
Trying to set up a laptop but the laptop is so shy on ram (8MB) that the
mandrake linux install hung on loading the ram drive and I have to try a
different distro. Gonna see if debian will work next. It's tough, all the
ones designed for idiot install assume more hardware than the laptop has to
offer.
I did go check out the coyote linux, but it requires a functioning system
to create the boot disk. Okay, called a bud of mine who's got caldera up
and running. Hoo boy! that stuff blew him away with complex! He couldn't
figure it out, even with the hardware info I had, so we gave up on that
one. (he's a newbie too). The machine I want to set up has a 100MB HD.
Dunno how much ram yet 'cause I havent' fired it up since building it and
don't know how much the simms are :-) One thing at a time, I've been
playing with networking.
I also did telnet to caspar's machine and learned a fair bit but I have to
go there during my sleep cycle due to timezones so it's not very effective.
No matter, time is relative and you can have as much as you need.
