Good choice. The basic debian install takes about 40meg of
HDD space and gives you an excellent platform for further
exploration.

The idiot installation routines assume that the idiots are
using Win9x hardware (i.e. Pentiums with 32meg RAM). For
older computers, Slackware and Debian are best.

A 100meg HD is more than enough for a Linux gateway/firewall.
You'll need 8meg RAM.
