] Easy there fella, there's a difference between having a linux toy and
] having a server. If I try to set up a server it would mean my internet
] access would be dependant on it and if I screwed up a night of work to
] repair. if I just set up a box with linux, I can play with no fear.

OK. I thought you might try a dual boot system on your main machine,
the one with the cable modem NIC. But it sounds like you need that
system running windows to do some work, and there is the slightest
chance installing linux might wreck it. (Even though linux is
designed to be easily multi-booted whereas windows is not as much)

] Trying to set up a laptop but the laptop is so shy on ram (8MB) that the
] mandrake linux install hung on loading the ram drive and I have to try a
] different distro. Gonna see if debian will work next. It's tough, all the
] ones designed for idiot install assume more hardware than the laptop has to
 ] offer.

The 'idiot distros' do require a more beefy computer because all the
userfriendliness is GUI, and to make it as much like windows 9x as
possible. I've found Slackware to be pretty friendly in some
respects. for example pppsetup is a console mode wizard type program.
[I found better than kppp anyway :)]

AFAIK Mandrake is optimised for Pentiums anyway. So Debian would be a
good choice, or any of the umsdos distros around. [monkey, dragon,
zipslack just to name a few - these 3 are the ones I've tried as well
as redhat and turbolinux on a friend's PR166. There's a list of the
umsdos distros somewhere but I've misplaced the URL]

] I did go check out the coyote linux, but it requires a functioning system
] to create the boot disk. Okay, called a bud of mine who's got caldera up
] and running. Hoo boy! that stuff blew him away with complex! He couldn't
] figure it out, even with the hardware info I had, so we gave up on that
] one. (he's a newbie too). The machine I want to set up has a 100MB HD.

Well try dragonlinux as it comes in a ARJ archive spanned over 7
disks. simply unarj into C:\ and its installed. This way there's no
need to worry about partitions or CD or NFS installs. [I say C:\
because all the files are off LINUX\ so you'll end up with one extra
directory. change to C:\LINUX and type "linux" [w/o quotes] and it
will load itself]

I think variations of that paragraph has been said too much. :)

] Dunno how much ram yet 'cause I havent' fired it up since building it and
] don't know how much the simms are :-) One thing at a time, I've been
 ] playing with networking.

Been there done that. <G>

] I also did telnet to caspar's machine and learned a fair bit but I have to
] go there during my sleep cycle due to timezones so it's not very effective.
] No matter, time is relative and you can have as much as you need.

What about getting a shell account at spunge.org? or even nyx.net.
FWIW I'm usually online 10pm my time [1200 GMT] for 4-6 hours. But
I'm having to cut that back soon. I can't stay up til dawn like I've
done the last few days... My ISP taking away the 4 hour connection at
a time limit isn't all good. <G>
