Hi pippi:

For a machine having no extended RAM, the very best version of DOS is version
3.30 or lower. Of course your machine is capable of handling perhaps even
the very newest DOS versions, but versions higher than 3.30 would cause
diminished performance due to a greater encroachment on your memory by the
system files. MS-DOS 3.30 will eat only 55,440 bytes of memory. MS-DOS 5.00
needs 62,576 bytes of memory and MS-DOS 6.22 needs 63,022 bytes. If it were
possible to load DOS high (not possible with your machine), then you might
want to consider using a DOS version higher than 3.30. If you like EDIT.COM,
which comes provided with DOS version 5.00 and higher, you may use it even
with DOS version 3.30 provided you have also a copy QBASIC, which is called
by EDIT.COM. IMHO, the very best freeware text editor suitable for using
with DOS 3.30 is PEDIT.EXE. It works just like EDIT.COM, but has more
features, such as spell check. For more information, and to download it,
go here: http://www.goldshell.com/pedit/pindex.htm. PEDIT does not require
QBASIC. As far as word processors go, your machine is capable of handling
even very high-end programs such as WordPerfect 5.1.
