OK, Have you tried installing nothing but what you had two years ago?
That is, don't install IE4, don't install any internet things you
didn't have back then. Then see if it does the same things.

One thing that could have happened was the power supply may have got
damaged. A few 0.1's of volts out could do everything you have
described. But do NOT open it unless you know what you're doing!!!

] I then installed Alta-Vista, connected and it was really s---l---o---w,

IE4 is slow enough on some 486DX4's I know. And they have 32MB RAM too!

] In weeks past there was discussion on SURVPC about 2X CD-ROM
] incompatabilities with Win 95, but it worked fine for over a year when
] it was used with Win95 on this same PC. When I knocked it over did I
] damage the motherboard? If I did then why doesn't Data Lifeguard Tools
] have the same problem accessing the hard drive as Win 95?

It could be the way it accesses it... you know 32 bits vs 16 bits.
I'm not sure of the technical differences though (as far as the
mobo/harddrive connection is concerned)

] Is this a hardware problem or software problem or both? Is the fate of
] this non-compliant drone-node to be salvaged for it's floppy, CD and HD

You have to do that to gateways since the mobo is not standard. Only
with other gateways of the same type.

Try:

Fooling with the software as above.

Reseat connectors. Losen/tighten screws. (not too tight but
definately not rattling around) etc

Putting m/b into another case but with its current hardware. (Hmm at
least are the power connectors the same? If you've got some spare
PSU's try plugging it in) This is not a long-term solution but at
least we will narrow the possibilities...

Test the harddrive and peripherals in other computers (that hopefully
are know to work with that particular hardware)
