For many years a set of, mostly freeware, standalone programs have been
available to enhance the capabilities for command.com and provide services
such as those that 4DOS provides. For example, changing to any directory
like 4DOS does, can be done with the famous freeware program ACD (enhanced
change directory) or the more recent wcd. There is also a large collection
of unix-like programs ported to dos. Thus, for instance, programs like
rm, mv, and cp allow you to delete, move, or copy several different files
on the command line, without using wildcards (e.g., rm file1 file2 file3).

See the Simtel archive ( I believe the URL is: http://www.simtel.net) for
a collection of command.com replacements including 4DOS.

Also see the GNU project (for instance at ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub) for
a couple of command com replacements that are, in essence, complete
Unix shells ported to dos. These are formidable shells with extensive
features and scripting capabilities that, I believe, far outshine those
of 4DOS.

The problem with command.com replacements, including 4DOS, that do more
than command.com is they always take up more memory than command.com.
When you consider the small amount of memory command.com requires, it is
pretty efficient for what it does.
