MC is a port for Linux of the famous NC (Norton Commander) for DOS.
Many things in UNIX systems (including Linux) are run as daemons. These can
perhaps (I'm not quite sure - please someone correct me if I'm wrong) be
described as TSRs that handles diffrent tasks (the http daemon for instance
handles all incomming http calls).
The closest you get to a daemon in DOS is DOOMs "refresh daemon" (DOOM was
made for UNIX-like systems after all).
