I'm not sure what you mean by "gets in trouble", but if you
are getting lock-ups, it could be Netscape. You may get
better stability if you turn off Netscape's java/script.

Rather than switch distributions, it would be much easier to
optimise your current kernel. Have you got the gcc compiler
installed?

1. Replace your bloated desktop with a lean wm, like icewm.
2. Downgrade your Netscape to a less bloated version.
3. Turn off unnecessary processes (including ttys)
4. Optimize your kernel.
