Yes, this certainly is one way to go and it has a lot of
appeal to a DOS dinosaur (like me). I ran Netscape this way
for about six months in my 486s (one with 16meg RAM, one with
12meg). It worked fine (except for the occasional Netscape
crash).
Then, as an experiment, I tried icewm. Boy, was I surprised.
It actually made Netscape perform better on those 486s.
Fewer crashes, smoother transitions, and heaps of additional
functionality. All this without a noticeable reduction in speed
-- in fact, if anything, Netscape runs faster under icewm. It
is just amazing. Icewm has a very small footprint, uses very
little memory and is totally stable. A wonderful, wonderful wm.
Cheers,
Steven
