Why?  If in the time you've had your machine you've gotten all the
applications on it working like you want, why would have to replace
it?  I've been using a second hand system for a year now, it was 2 years
old when I got it, it will continue to satisfy me for another year at the
least, up to five very possibly.  I know plenty of people with 5 year old
pentium systems that other than upgrading the ram for some of the more
fancy bits and adding new tricks like burners or dvd, they are continuing
to use the same system.
I don't think anyone is forcing anyone else to upgrade, I know people who
continue to happily use the applications and operating system, printers and
peripherals from the early '90s.  486 running win3.1 getting mail on a 14.4
just like ever.  No problem.  It's when YOUR demands change that your
machine has to change.  You want to join the mp3 party or get voice
dictation software or watch entire movies on your PC instead of on your
VCR/TV, etc.
