Back in the days when I had a shell account, but no ppp account I was
very happy with the free program, Slirp, which emulates ppp on your
shell, by making your shell act like a proxy server. In fact, it can
be a bit faster than ordinary dial-up ppp service, since it buffers
data on your ISPs, usually large big unix server instead of your PC.

If your shell account ISP does not mind you using it, you can have
shell and effective PPP for $$15 a month. Slirp does not compromise
security, but some ISPs have rules against this kind of software,
because they want to sell you the PPP themselves.
