Garra - no, it doesn't work to hold the power button pressed: on the
contrary, doing that lets the laptop (a Toshiba Sat 300) go to standby
for a (short) while and wakes it up then. So that button has some
"timeout" of sorts, holding the button pressed is like two presses
consecutively.

The most nagging thing with this is that there's no means to get the
BIOS data/screen, or to get at them directly.
