I ran an AMD K5 system for a while. It's generally the same as a Pentium at
the same clockspeed. I also ran an AMD 5x86 -- their 'pushed up' 486 that
perhaps you're thinking of.

The K5 worked quite well as a Pentium (133MHz) at the same clock speed, and
even a bit better in some benchmarks. I had no problems using this CPU on a
Socket 7 motherboard which had also previously run a Pentium 120. At the
time, I was running Windows 95 on it. The biggest reason for later moving to
a K6-2 was to get the benefits of 3D-Now for game performance (supported in
DirectX).

I'd suggest setting conservative (slow) BIOS parameters to make sure you're
not operating outside other system component tolerances before giving up on
it. Also, double-check your motherboard to make sure it's truly compatible.
If you're reasonably sure it IS the CPU that's at fault, replacement with a
K6-2 or Pentium should be fairly painless. DO check your motherboard
specifications first.

Good luck with it.
