Yolanda - the built-in editor of Midnight Commander (mc) is exactly
the nice little thing one needs to edit all sorts of config files and
the like with. And one even knows where and what one's editing...
("vi" indeed is a pain, no only regionally.)

ps - And then I *never* got that vanilla-Pentium90, with a (fine) Compaq
monitor and an AT Mach64 card running X-windows (in whatever Linux
flavour): card is recognized, monitor is recognized, all elements on
the list of the Xconfigurator etc, but no way to make it go. One reason:
the correct numbers for horizontal/vertical refresh have to be
introduced manually in the config. file - the configuration utilities
would not do this and would not change the default values there (which
are wrong) - , and for the correct values, as given from the manufacturer
of the monitor, there is "no valid modeline found". Now, would I risk to
blow up the monitor with just arbitrary set hor/vert refresh settings
which would *perhaps* match the x-modeline-list ?
No. Machine runs Win$ now. End of that story. -hc
