Thankyou bernie, no, you are not crazy, but i need very specific, step by
step instructing or i do not know anything.  Linux takes an advanced
computer user right back to the start, like a guy sitting at the computer
tapping his mouse at the monitor, wondering why it doesn't work.
anyway, i'm a good touch typist and taking notes does no harm and helps me
internalize anyway so i don't mind.
Also, the laptop can now "see" the linux box although i cannot seem to
figure out what the heck the share passwords are to actually open anything
~grin~
that's something i'll work on after i get the bugs worked out of the ip
forwarding.
