That's an X configuration issue. If the monitor were at fault, you might see
a distorted GUI screen if X were running, but certainly nothing would peel
it back and reveal the CLI.
Have you tried the most generic settings? You might wind up with a really
ugly 640x480 256 color display to start with, but then you'd know it CAN
work at some level
.
Proplery identifying your video card's chipset is fundamental. What sort of
video card is it? Is it listed in the hardware compatability list? Did the
Xconfigurator (RedHat) program identify the card properly? Have you verified
video settings etc.?
If you've got it going in Windows at 800x600 and the video card is
supported, the monitor should work fine at the same resolution and refresh
rates under X. (Usual disclaimers apply, of course :)
You're probably close, but unless your video card is well supported, it can
be an adventure. The good news is that more and more are supported monthly
as more manufacturers realize Windows is not the only player in town and
begin supporting Linux -- or at least opening up specifications.
If all else fails, do you have a different type of video card to test?
Good luck!
