Wow, a quick search of freshmeat is always fun! Turns out there's another
called "oleo" (see http://www.gnu.org/software/oleo/doc/oleo.html) that
works in X AND console mode. I downloaded the .deb and fired it up. The
interface is definitely NOT like Lotus or Excel, but that's not necessarily
a bad thing. (hint: spend some time with the info pages before trying it.)

One interesting feature that both support is filter mode (read file from
stdin, save to stdout). sed for spreadsheets?

Jude, it looks like there may be a few more options than I was aware of.
That's what I love about Linux and Open Source: There are just SO MANY
options.
