Cripple:  no.  Reduce it's functionality:  perhaps.
The main purpose of links is navigating directories
and viewing files (including mail).  Many users never
use BasicLinux online, and even those that do, don't
necessarily view GIFs.

And many complained about the lack of JPEGs. :-)
I regularly go online with links myself and rarely
click on a GIF.  There are just too many junk GIFs
around to make it worthwhile (and all their tags
clutter up the screen).  I won't miss that feature
at all.  However, I am open to persuasion -- if people
feel this feature is important, then I'd like to hear
about it.
