I got in contact with the author of Ted, the other wordprocessor I've been
thinking of recommending for BL2. The author pointed out to me that the
version I was using (2.11) had some problems, and that I should upgrade to
2.12. I was still a bit skeptical, since I was unable to get 2.11 to do
much of anything I tried (in terms of advanced formatting). However,
version 2.12 passed all my test with flying colors. I was able to create
multiple footnotes, insert footnotes into an existing document, create
headers, insert a table, change font faces etc. It's a prelimiary test,
but so far it looks really good. I may try some "real world" testing with
it soon, or perhaps come up with some other "trials" to put it through
(deleting or adding a footnote to see if it renumbers the
foontotes correctly comes to mind). But so far, it's starting to look like
a perhaps ideal candidate for BL2. It creates files in .rtf format by
default. The one that I created and sent to my wife, asking her to open it
in M$Word, seems to have displayed just fine. As I think I noted
previously, Ted can convert files to .pdf - with the addition of other
software (Ghostscript) and additional tweaking.

The download is a 2.5 MB tar.gz file. There is a companion install script
that must be downloaded as well - installTed.sh. It installed just fine on
this P90 with Vectorlinux (Slack-based) and it performs well: at a
comfortbale pace, and not overly slowly. I noted a couple of minor display
issues (vertical lines left behind as you scroll right or left), but no
serious problems yet. The installed binary is just under 3MB. The LDD
included in my last note on Ted probably applies to this version as well.

If you'd like. Steven, I could send you the smallish .rtf file (18KB, 3
or 4 pages) I created with Ted so you can see the end results. Unless you
have a wordprocessor that will display footnotes (as I said, I don't think
Abiword has this capability), you will be unable to appreciate some of the
features. Let me know if I should send it along.

James
