I appreciate this detailed assessment, James.  It is very useful.
So, in terms of MSW compatibility, AbiWord is ahead.  However,
that is just one factor.  There are other things equally important.
Footprint and speed come immediately to mind.

I think somebody (here?) said that Ted might need Gimp.  Is that
correct?  If so, it would increase the footprint considerably.

As far as speed goes, I would be grateful James (or somebody)
would do some Ted-vs-Abiword timings (on the same machine).
How long does each take to boot?  How long does each take to
scroll from the top of a long document to the bottom?  How
long does each take to spell check a long document?  How
reponsive is the keyboard (when you press a key quickly several
times, how well does it keep up)?

If Ted is substantially faster than AbiWord, then it may be
better for BL2 (even if its MSW compatibility is not as good).
