Hello James -

>Perhaps this argues for adoption of a non-.doc standard (like .rtf) that
can be readily imported and rendered by M$Word, at least as an interim
solution. Perhaps better M$Word compatibility will be forthcoming from
Linux wordprocessors over the next year or two. For now, it's not really
there and should not be treated as a standard.

I'm getting the impression you are not aware that even versions of MSWord
are not compatible with other versions of MSWord?

I wrote a resume (three actually) on MSWord v2.0 and took it to another
machine with what I think was MSWord v5.0 and found I had to do minor
editing. When they upgraded these machines to MSW v6.0 it would not even
import MSW v2.0 anymore. Since that time I've read of similar problems
with each new version of MSWord.

The reason for Linux not being compatible is that it just isn't possible.
At work we paid $99 to buy a third-party conversion program from Word
Perfect and even then some documents were mangled.

People really shouldn't 'play' at desktop publishing in a word processor
and especially when writing a resume they intend to keep and use for any
length of time. Many resumes get a bit too 'cute' and look like flyers for
a circus that has come to town. :-\
