Speed test results using Abiword 1.0.3 and Ted 2.12: Tests performed on a P90 with 64MB RAM, 800MB HD. Vectorlinux 3.0 with 2.4.19 kernel, reiser file system. Tests performed with other progs open in the background (Opera, Pine, Gaim and an aterm connected to the ISP). If having programs open in the background distorts test results, let me know and I can perform them again with nothing open but the prog under testing (did this in the middle of my work day, so not ideal testing circumstances)
Test one - program loading. Ted loads fully in about 5 seconds. Abiword takes 15 seconds. Test 2: with the program loaded, open a small (2 pg single spaced) rtf file. Ted takes 8 seconds, Abiword takes 10 seconds. Test 3: with program loaded, open a short (1.5 pg) .doc (M$Word) file. Ted takes 4 seconds, Abiword takes 7 seconds. Test 4: with the program loaded, open a 28 pg rtf document with advanced formatting (images, table, foonotes, url's). Ted takes 15 seconds, Abiword takes 75 seconds (Abiword is converting the document). Test 5: with the program loaded, open a drop-dowm menu item (fonts). Ted takes 13 seconds, Abiword takes 2 seconds. Test 6: with the program loaded, start a new document. Ted takes 3 seconds, Abiword takes 9 seconds (Abiword starts a new instance of the program interface). Plently of further tests could be done. I have not tried opening a long M$Word document, for example (none handy here). Please suggest other tests to which we might subject these 2 programs for valid comparison.
