No, I've not tried the most-recent BLv2.0 yet.

No.  I'm the fellow who had to remove all of eznet and replace it
with the standard Linux PPP dialup then rewrite the BL image file
to my hard drive with these changes.

There is no reason why anyone would've even _written_ vi much less
use it for anything.

I'm keeping in mind the flippant response I got from EZNET's author
that he no longer cared if it worked or not.

You say "probably can be done" because you've not had to try to
work with it.  AFAIK there is no "one way or the other" there
is one way period for EZNET and if that one way doesn't work
you're screwed.
