*grin*  Actually, it was written to add the visual stuff to the existing ex
editor (or was it ed?  No, I think ex; ed didn't even have a prompt).  That's
why the commands are cryptic; those are what ex used.  The cursor movement
(hjkl) are from the old terminals which had the left, up, down and right
arrows on those keys; it's all explainable, and probably made sense at the
time, especially to the sort of people who were working on Unix.

That said, I have to admit to liking vi and preferring it over any other
editor I've used on Unix.  I even have the cygwin and Watcom versions
installed on Windows and DOS machines.
