mention that I really like the combination of Xemacs and gnus...

Someone else (Ted Harding?) has already mentioned XFMail.  Let me second
that suggestion.  I used it for a long time before I discovered the joys of
gnus, and I liked it a lot.  If you haven't tried it yet, you might want to
check it out.
