To me, the only need of a template engine is to avoid public template contributors to use lower level language functionalities. For example, if you launch a brand new blog farm, you won't allow public members to write their templates in PHP and run them, or you are crazy. In other cases, I can't see any advantage of another custom templating syntax to learn and to maintain.
