I wonder if apart could be used instead:
eq=cancel(1/x + c/(1+y) + 1/c + 1/y + x + 3*x**2)
eq
(c*x + c*y + x*y + c*x*y + c*y**2 + x*y**2 + c*y*x**2 + c*x**2*y**2 +
x*y*c**2 + 3*c*x**3*y**2 + 3*c*y*x**3)/(c*x*y + c*x*y**2)
for s in eq.atoms(Symbol):
... print s, ":", apart(eq, s)
...
y : 1/y + c/(1 + y)
x : x + 1/x + 3*x**2
c : 1/c
