I think this would make a great project as monitoring for Solaris has pretty
much been left to 3rd party tools by Sun. That's okay in corporate environments
where people spend money on one tool for everything. However, if
Solaris/OpenSolaris came with all the MIBs out the box, that would probably
help everyone across the board. As to which community it should be run under,
the Observability Community might be appropriate. But I also think we should
participate and perhaps do a peer review and be a source of testing. The MIBs
should work with Net-SNMP, but we need folks to test them with other products
out there and show that it's re-usable. Doing that will earn a lot of street
credit and make this a key component going forward.

On a side note, does anyone here use webmin on Solaris or OpenSolaris? I'm
curious if that is being maintained and enhanced. I haven't used it in a while.
But I think since we're on the topic of having good monitoring that we need
good management tools for SA's and NOC type of environments.

All of these are simple kstats. For fsstat data you will likely want to
wrap it a bit to expose based on the filesystem name rather than fs_id.

The primary reason I suggest a kstat passthrough is that I'm pushing to
get more ZFS data available via kstat... but if the MIB even was a
wrapper around select kstats, it could be implemented in such a way that
addition of additional data would be straight forward to anyone who had
a specific need.

I would love to participate in this where I can. I've spent a lot of
time working with Net-SNMP but I admit that I've never really figured
out how to implement a MIB. If you've got a working model I'd be
extremely interested in filling in my learning gap.

I am curious though, if this became a project would it not be best a
project of the Observability Community?
