Found a Mac IIci in a Friends Garage. Brought it home and plugged in
the mouse and keyboard and found a VGA converter for it. It started
up and made the good boot sound. But then i got the folder with the ?
flashing..... nothing to boot off of. I listened to the hard drive
and it is spinning. I took out the floppy and cleaned it with
compressed air and put it back in. It seems to work. When I put the
disk in it spings up reads and ejects. I am trying to make a boot
disk out of the files available from Apple's site. I want to do
System 6 because it is so much smaller and easier than 7. So I
downloaded System 6.0.8. There were two image files for HD 1.44mb
floppies like I have. I tried getting the image to copy from a PC to
the floppy (as my powermac has no floppy) but I sucked it up and got a
USB floppy Drive for my G4. I put in the floppy formatted it as Mac
OS Standard (this is all in OSX on my G4) and used the terminal
command ditto -rsrcFork to copy the files from the system install
image file to the floppy. For those that don't know. ditto -rsrcFork
copies the files and preserves the resource fork info. I then ejected
the floppy booted up the mac. Threw it in the drive and it spins up
reads and ejects and shoes an X where the ? used to be for about 5
flashes, then goes back to the ?. I then tried using the command
bless -folder (the floppy)/System Folder. However, that also led to
the same result on the Mac IIci. I have tried all the system 6 disks
from Apple site and some of the System 7 disks. All give the same
result. I also tried using Disk Copy to "restore" the disk image file
straight to the floppy.... however this fails every time for an
unknown reason. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. Or is this
just a bad floppy drive?

and on a separate note, there is a video card installed in the system
and the monitor only works when i plug it into the video card.... the
built in display plug does not seem to be working. I even tried
removing the video card but it still did nothing.
And on another separate note, when the power is plugged in it turns on
without touching the on button. Nor have i found a way to turn it off
without just unplugging it. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
