A new handset would likely make a great deal of difference. If the t610 only had
good or marginal RF then it might not make a huge differnce but the t610 is
notorious for poor RF as you said yourself.

Of the phones T-Mobile offers I'd recommend a Nokia 3660 or 6600 although
probably bigger than you'd like, especially coming from a t610. The 3660 and
6600 are top RF performers. If you can't make a good call with either of them
no phone will.
