I've had the same issue in a similar location in Chicago (downtown).
Problem is acute with my blackberry 7100 (not known for their superior
RF performance) but is mostly non-existant with a Nokia 6600 (internal
antenna-excellent RF performance) or even a Motorola V180 (external
stubby antenna-above average RF performance). BTW, I get 4 or 5 bars
with all the phones almost all the time. There are 'hacks' available
on howardforums.com for the Nokia 6600 to use the full power mode,
without it down-adjusting for "too much" signal strength. Obviously,
there will be some loss of battery life. Hope this helps.
