Sponsored by TWIST - Tablet Weavers International Studies & Techniques
Hi All,
As a weaver who moved last year from one side of the world to the other, the
need to find supplies to feed my craft habits naturally surfaced. I was
able to find a relatively local weavers' supply store (within an hour's
drive from me), but I found that a lot of my colleagues here didn't go there
themselves. They waited for the vendor to set up a table at monthly
meetings or for the regional meetings every 2 years to stock up. Or mail
order, I guess.
While living in Holland, I was also one of the few who would drive 3 hours
to visit certain shops, although that was considered a rare thing to do
among my guilds, unless people planned a convoy of several cars at once.
In Holland, not everyone had a car, so I can understand that traveling long
distances just to see the yarns/try out the supplies, etc. could be
prohibitive. But is this universal amongst weavers? I have made some of my
equipment for TWing, but I also like to visit shops and see what is new.
I am curious to know how most people are acquiring their tablet weaving
supplies, so I have a little survey here. You can reply to me privately, but
I think this might get an interesting general discussion going on the list.
How far do you travel to get TW supplies (same town/nearby city/same
country/internationally)? Approximately how far(distance or time-wise)?
Do you use mail order? (And does this mean by Internet or by phone?)
DO you make what you need(spinning yarns/making cards, etc.)?
If you don't have a local yarn shop, have you found any other sort of shop
with supplies)?
Do you wait till local/regional conferences and buy in bulk there?
Thanks for sharing and satisfying my curiosity!
