Yes! I use one too. Tho in my case I use two dowels. I turn the cards two turns, place a dowel, turn back two turns, place another dowel. This works perfectly as a spreader. It helps to rubber band the ends together so they don't go sprong when you loosen the tension to advance the warp. ;-]

I also had difficulty with turning my pack of cards until I got a warp spreader. Linda Hendrickson has a very reasonably priced one on her website and it made a huge difference for me.
