I've been having a conversation with another long-time
tablet weaver, and it brought up something interesting
- what do you start your students out with? I always
start with a half-black, half-white warp, because it
can be easily set up (I pre-warp them, to get the
students past the hurdle of warping before they get
hooked on the weaving...

case I think it is. My reasons are also very similar to yours -
I'd rather give people something they can play with, and
do different things depending on how quickly they "get it".
And, as you say, diamonds and stuff aren't necessarily
simple for the novice.
