In my brief foray into surveying, we gained the starting point using
differential GPS. I can't remember the details, but it used an expensive
looking pair of Leica GPS units. If you can get access to something like
that... ;)

I second the trig points though if you can see some. Does your total
station allow manual pointing? How about borrowing a theodolite for
fixing your location?
