The good news is, that there exists one way of ensuring nothing is on
the command line, prior to your typing the EXIT command. Simply just
press the Escape key, type EXIT, and hit Enter. The Escape key, clears
the commandline, no matter what is on it at the moment.
For different reasons, I find that the Command Prompt Window does not
always close, even with the Exit instruction. The best workaround then,
is that you press Alt-Space, and scroll to Close, or simply just hit C.
This will force the window to be closed.
Should none of this work, you always have the last resort to most
software hang-ups. Pressing Ctrl-Escape, will bring up the task-manager,
and here you can "Kill" the CMD (or, Command Line Prompt) software.

In addition to this, the RIGHT ARROW brings back the previous command one
character at a time, and F3 brings back the entire command. The point is
that there a number of ways one can accidentally put characters on the line
without thinking about it, and then, as you said, typing EXIT results in an
error.

When working in the command prompt you cannot move around with the regular
arrows. You can read the screen with the mouse keys.
If the output of a command fills more than one screen and you pipe to more,
you need to press enter until all screens have been displayed. If you don't
pipe to more, everything should scroll by, leaving you at the prompt. I
found an interesting thing when checking it out. If you press the up arrow
while at the command prompt, it brings back the last command you ran. If
you then type exit, it gets added to the end of your previous command and
gives a "command not recognized" error.

FYI,
If i use the command
ipconfig | more
then I can get to the IPV4 address that I am looking for, and then continue
to press the enter key until I get to the end of the file and the prompt
where I can type the command "exit" followed by pressing the enter key and
the screen clears.
When I do not pipe to more, I cannot seem to scroll down to get to the
information that I need or to get to the end of the file, where I can enter
the exit command...
I recall that Chris G. also said that I could redirect the output of the
ipconfig command to a file, as an option. I haven't tried this yet, but, I
trust Chris G.
