Hi Dave,

I'm wondering if your system is configured to go to sleep after a period of
time, in which case your sound device does as well, and returning from sleep
your sound device remains dormant.
I recommend disabling sleep mode under Power Options and see whether your
sound drops out.

I too have noticed that the Speech can be gone when returning to my
system that has just been sitting for a spell.  

When this has happened, I wondered if something is not right in memory,
or if some new screen, I know nothing about, is now popping up and
grabbing focus.  

Re booting is the only fix for the time being.
