If I'm thinking of the same thing that you are, most of them were very
large farms and have since been split up into lots of smaller farms or
were towns but have become ghost towns.

Also the ABS (Aust Beureu of Statistics) also calls gazetted
boundaries suburbs, even if almost no one lives there, but it's not
the same thing as a suburb in Sydney, Melb etc.
