Problem solved... mysteriously. I right-clicked the Inbox and clicked New and then Folder. I clicked Cancel in the Create A New Folder dialogue box. And lo and behold the (1) simply disappeared from the Total column for my Inbox. I guess that was part of Ian's "etc." :)
